 Athletics  Career:
Gérard started participating in athletics at a very young age (7 years) and proved to be better at high jump than track items. He continued till late in his secondary school career to focus on high jump but also started to participate in track items when he was 15 years old, where he participated in every item from 100m to 400m Hurdles. The 400m Hurdles was his best item, but due to the pressures of studies in his final school year and the tough training programme for the 400m, he rather focused on the 100 and 200m races.

He quickly adapted to the shorter distances which was supposed to serve as speed training
for the 400m. Good coaching from the trainers, Mr. Dirk Van Rensburg and others, at the local Athletics Club in Bethlehem “Going4Gold” and training partners Philip Kemp and Jacques van Zyl, motivated Gérard to greater heights.

His best performances are listed in the table below:

Gérard’s hero is Edwin Moses, the famed 400m Hurdle athlete from the USA who
dominated
the item in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Despite his
achievements Edwin Moses remained a humble man and after his retirement is
working hard to keep the sport free from drugs and un-prohibited substances.

Gérard lives by the following quote from the Bible:
“Place your trust in God an depend on hearing His voice for guidance”
